In the UK today there are around half a million children and young people with brain conditions that result in complex medical, educational and social support needs. We are a charity that helps these children and their families discover a better life together.

What we’re doing

We work closely with our families to find out where help is most needed and then work with our university partners to fund the relevant research. Our research work across neurodevelopmental conditions gives us a unique perspective within the charity research sector.

Our aim is to provide research-driven, high-quality health and social care advice and support for the families of children with brain conditions from birth to the age of 16.

Cerebra’s objectives are to:

  • Use only current, relevant, balanced and trustworthy sources of information and ensure they are clearly referenced
  • Inform parents and carers about different conditions and the issues surrounding these so that they have a better understanding
  • Empower parents and carers to make their own decisions and resolve problems and issues

Our funding also supports the Cerebra Innovation Centre which designs and builds innovative, bespoke products to help disabled children discover the world around them. Some of these products are unique to an individual family, while other designs go on to be manufactured to help others.

In addition we provide a free library service with books for adults and children. We also fund LEaP, our innovative problem-solving project that runs alongside our Legal Rights Service offering help and support to those in need.

The CYP Co-ordinator is a non-clinical support role for children and young people aged 2–17 and their families. The aim is simple: to help you find the right support at the right time.

This service is especially helpful if you have emotional or mental health worries. The CYP Co-ordinator acts as a friendly point of contact, helping you understand what support is available and how to access it, so care feels more joined up and less confusing.

Whether you’re looking for someone to talk to, local activities, support groups, our co-ordinator will take the time to listen, help you feel comfortable, and find the support that is right for you.

Where the service is available

At present, the service is available to children and young people registered with the following GP practices in Uxbridge and West Drayton: Belmont Medical Centre, Brunel Medical Centre, Central Uxbridge Surgery, Hillingdon Health Centre, Oakland Medical Centre, Otterfield Medical Centre, The High Street Practice, The Green Medical Centre, Yiewsley Family Practice.

Through our programme of healthy food and fun activities, children and young people can develop new skills, take part in creative and physical activities, learn about food and cooking, and enjoy free nutritious meals each day.

Does my child qualify for the HAF programme?

Our holiday programme is open to school-aged children from reception to year 11 (inclusive) who are educated, live or under local authority care in Hillingdon and receive benefits-related free school meals. Benefits-related free school meals (FSM) are available to pupils if their parents are in receipt of one of the qualifying benefits, and have a claim verified by their school or local authority.

Our providers can use up to 15% of their funding towards providing free or subsidised holiday club places for children who are not in receipt of benefits-related free school meals but meet 1 of the following criteria:

  • children assessed by the local authority as being in need, at risk or vulnerable
  • young carers
  • looked-after children or previously-looked-after children
  • children who are refugees or asylum seekers.

Important: Our providers aren’t obliged to provide places for the above children and young people. If you feel that your child meets the criteria above, please email our HAF coordinator at hafprogramme@hillingdon.gov.uk to discuss access to a place on the programme. Additionally, not all activity providers will be able to accommodate the full age range of the programme. Please check with the provider what age group is appropriate to their activity.

How do I book a place for my child?

Bookings are made through individual activity providers. The programme offer along with booking links and contact information for providers are on the programme offer web page. Parents/guardians need to provide their child’s individual Hillingdon HAF reference number at the point of booking, to secure their free place.

Reference numbers are sent directly to parents/guardians of eligible children. If you have not received one, or would like to request a discretionary place, please email hafprogramme@hillingdon.gov.uk or call 01895 277 881.

Young carers are children and young people, aged 5 – 24 years, who provide regular and ongoing care to a family member who has a long-term illness, disability, mental health issue or misuses substances. The family member may be a parent, sibling or grandparent living with them.

Caring responsibilities can have a significant impact on young people and can affect their physical and mental health, education and social opportunities. Carers Trust Hillingdon has been supporting young carers since 2001.

We aim to mitigate the impact of caring on young people through the provision of emotional support, school liaison, information and advice and regular social activities. We also work in partnership with local organisations and schools to identify young carers and raise awareness of their needs.

ORCHYD is a registered charity providing day trips and residential holidays for children with disabilities. Apart from unforgettable memories, we provide respite and grants for families.

Our Past

ORCHYD was initially set up in 1971 when a collection of like-minded people from the Ruislip Christian Council and the charity Scope got together to organise and run a holiday for children with physical disabilities based in Ruislip, West London. Although a lot has changed in the last five decades – Scope are no longer involved, DBS checks are mandatory and we have our own minibuses – the core purpose is the same; to provide an amazing summer holiday for children with physical disabilities. In recent years, ORCHYD have expanded and have hosted several weekends, have a regular day trip scheme and have even taken a group to Disneyland Paris!

Our Present

Every year we run a summer residential holiday for children with physical disabilities. This holiday includes lots of exciting trips out and fun activities in our hall. These give our children some absolutely incredible, once in a lifetime experiences and give them a chance to make new friends and memories that will stick with them forever.

What we do

  • Annual summer residential holiday available to children from all over the UK. Up to a maximum of twenty children aged between 8-12 years old.
  • Day trips / residential weekends for groups of up to 8 children aged 7-15 years old
  • Funding grants where applications are in line with our charitable objects

Refugees in Effective and Active Partnership (REAP) (Charity 1103345) is an independent, refugee-led organisation in West London that aims to empower refugees and asylum-seekers to live as valuable and valued members of British society. We believe that it is essential to protect the right to refuge so people can escape danger and suffering caused by persecution, and that one implication of giving refuge is that there must also be reasonable level of effective and equitable support for people as they recover and rebuild.

We work towards our aim through practical activities and engagement; communications, training and networking across the voluntary and community sectors (VCS), and policy-oriented activities in partnership with others including building constructive exchange between VCS and statutory bodies relating to knowledge and support for refugees. We seek to enhance the voices and build the capability of those individuals who have sought refuge in the UK, and their communities; by promoting equality and equitable treatment for refugees in all their diversity; by facilitating organisations and individual activists and professionals that support refugees to rebuild their lives.

Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity supports families who have a child aged 0-18 years with a life-threatening or terminal illness.

How?

When a child has a serious illness, family life is turned upside down and time becomes more precious than ever. Rainbow Trust pairs each family with an expert Family Support Worker who enables them to make the most of time together, giving them practical and emotional support, whenever they need it, for as long as is needed.

We support the whole family including parents, carers, the unwell child, brothers, sisters and grandparents. Support is hugely varied and depends on the needs of the family. It can include:

  • listening to a family’s fears and anxieties
  • helping to explain illnesses, diagnoses and treatments
  • keeping a seriously ill child company during hospital stays
  • driving families to medical appointments to help save time and money
  • organising fun activities to help sick children, their brothers and sisters
  • support through bereavement and grief.
